If there is one thing that has always been a highlight of the GEIA Seminar, it is that it has characteristics of an academic event through the lectures given by researchers in the area, perspectives of operational personnel (i.e. the pilots and air traffic controllers themselves), and presentations from aeronautical English teachers, course and material designers, and those responsible for preparing and applying proficiency exams, both in Brazil (ANAC and DECEA) and in other countries. This year, since we have international speakers, this combination of stakeholders takes on even greater proportions, enabling discussions and exchanges of experiences at a global level.
The keynote speakers are Prof. Eric Friginal from Georgia State University, USA and Prof. Noriko Ishihara, from Hosei University, Japan. Besides the presentations of GEIA members from Brazil, we also feature speakers from New Zealand, Switzerland, China, Canada and from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, USA. Another innovation worth mentioning is that this year we will have two Zoom meetings in which it will be possible to interact in real time with speakers and other participants.
In addition to the lectures, we will have more “practical” presentations featuring successful case studies of teaching online, something that has been much sought after due to the pandemic. Aeronautical language analysis and description, as well as assessment, are on the program too. There will be a presentation on how to use Instagram in teaching aeronautical English, along with the recommendation of nine Instagram profiles on this topic, created and maintained by Brazilian air traffic controllers.

Finally, to give you a taste of what’s to come, we made four “teasers.” That is, there are four videos in which the speakers and presenters talk about what they are going to present at the event on the GEIA website.
Check out the introductions from keynote speakers Prof. Eric Friginal and Prof. Noriko Ishihara, as well as ICAEA’s Neil Bullock, below.
We hope to see you at the 8th GEIA Seminar when you can watch the full presentations.
